Villagers and school children gathered at the War Memorial at Firs Field in Combe Down today to fall silent at the eleventh hour.
The service, led by Reverend Paul Kenchington, was attended by around 100 people including children from Year 5 and 6 from Combe Down Primary School, local veterans and the Deputy Mayor.
Former Combe Down councillor Leila Wishart told us: “It was a very moving ceremony, and there was a very good turnout… It had a lovely feeling of a village ceremony, which must be taking place all over the country.”
Major John Guest, Poppy Appeal organiser for Bath, was the parade commander and after the service told us: “Combe Down actually has quite a lot of links with the military going back to the Second World War.
“There were a lot of troops stationed around the area and as you can see from the names on the War Memorial, a significant number of men in both wars never came home.”
The people of Bath have displayed a huge amount of generosity since the launch of the County Poppy Appeal at the end of October.
One very generous member of the public donated a cheque for £1,000 to the appeal and we are looking forward to hearing the total amount raised.
