Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Nextbike in Bath cycle hire scheme has seen substantial growth since its introduction last year, winning fans amongst residents and visitors alike.
With bike ‘stations’ located at nine key points around the city, the bikes have been ideal for people wishing to substitute the car for shorter journeys while also enabling visitors to get to Bath’s most popular attractions just a few minutes ride away.
Since launching, over 7,000 journeys have been made by Nextbikes and the demand has been such that now three new stations are also being installed to boost the number of bikes available to 130.
Cllr Anthony Clarke (Conservative, Lansdown), Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “I am delighted that so many people are using Nextbike as a simple and fun way to get around the city and experience Bath in a way that would not be possible by car.
“Improving transport is one of the top six priorities of our new administration, and this includes action to support sustainable transport options such as walking and cycling.
“The additional stations will enable more residents living just outside the centre to take advantage of this resource, and to support students in the area to leave cars at home and cycle and walk while studying in Bath.”
Registration for Nextbike can be done via phone, mobile app or internet, and with hire charges from as low as £1 for 30 minutes, it’s a competitive alternative to the car or bus.
