Parents and carers of children and young people with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities (SEND) are being invited by the Council to help shape support services.

New legislation currently going through Parliament will affect how statements, reviews and services will be delivered and publicised and how local authority responsibility will be defined for local young people up to the age of 25 with SEND.

Bath & North East Somerset Council and the Bath and North East Somerset Clinical Commissioning Group are keen to discuss with parents and carers how to build on the good work already being carried out across the district, and hear their views about how the support could be even more family-focused.

Cllr Dine Romero (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council is keen to ensure we have joined-up and family-centred services across education, health and social care for children and young people up to age 25 who have special educational needs or disabilities. The overall intention is to improve the long-term outcomes for all children and young people.

“Our support will be focused on enabling children, young people and their families to achieve their long-term aspirations. Parents, carers and young people will be fully involved in developing our local approach; reviewing and improving it over time.  We are learning from the good work that has already been done by other authorities around the country and we’re asking those involved locally for their views about how we can make sure the support we provide truly meets their needs.”

Parents and carers of children and young people with special educational needs or disabilities are welcome to find out more and get involved by attending an event at the Fry Club and Conference Centre, Keynsham, on Tuesday 22nd October 2013, from 9.30am to 2.30pm.

A light lunch will be provided and a crèche will be available. Anyone wishing to attend the 22nd October event must book their place in advance by calling 01225 394382 or emailing [email protected].

The event is being hosted by Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Parent Partnership Service and Parents Carers Aiming High.
