Bath restaurant Miller & Carter has been granted listed building consent to carry out specialist repair works to a ceiling after it partially collapsed.

Miller & Carter on the corner of Milsom Street
The steakhouse on the corner of Milsom Street and George Street was formerly a Lloyds Bank.
The main building was built in 1875, and it was extended by a single-storey wing on George Street in 1902.
The application submitted to Bath & North East Somerset Council concerned the interior of the extension, which is next to the former banking hall.
The lath and plaster ceiling with decorative plasterwork partially collapsed and other areas were temporarily boarded over to prevent further collapse.
The application included details of the proposed ceiling repairs in line with Historic England guidance.
Floorboards at first floor level above the restaurant space in the 1875 building will also be temporarily lifted so the void can be cleaned and inspected.
Council planning officers said the proposed works will preserve the special interest of the Grade II listed building, but also highlighted that they address the symptoms, rather than the cause of the collapse.
In their report they said: “It seems likely that the location of large ceiling-mounted AC units would exert downward forces on the ceiling fabric that was not originally designed to accommodate this.
“It is recommended to investigate and address the cause of collapse to prevent future further damage.”
