Newbridge Towers at Newbridge Hill closed in 2022 and planning permission was granted in 2024 to convert the detached property into a private house with 10 en-suite bedrooms and facilities including a gym, games room and cinema room.
Then earlier this year an alternative proposal was presented by Alpus Projects Ltd to turn the four-storey building into 10 self-contained retirement apartments and build three detached houses in the grounds.
Bath & North East Somerset Council has now been notified that the outline application has been withdrawn “due to a change in circumstances”.
Local councillor Michelle O’Doherty (Newbridge, Liberal Democrat) had raised concerns about the proposals, saying that while fully in support of the principle of converting the existing building into homes for older people, the proposed garden development represented a “significant overdevelopment” of a sensitive site, contrary to multiple adopted planning policies.
