Permission sought to build block of flats designed as “Italianate villa”

A block of flats, designed as an “Italianate villa,” could soon be built near the centre of Bath.

Cenc Villa Ltd hopes to build four flats next to Grade II listed Miles House, which stands over the canal on Bathwick Hill, as a “smaller handed version of the existing villa.”

Architect John Blake said: “The material and detail that is proposed to be used on the new Villa will be the same sort of motifs as Miles House along with other appropriate details for the era.”

Miles House was built in the mid-nineteenth century and has been a private house, a rectory, home to Bath Voluntary Association for Mental Welfare, Bathwick Hospital, and a pre-school before it was converted into flats.

The new flats would be built where there is currently an area of tarmac next to the house.

Mr Blake said: “In order to ensure that Miles House continues to be the dominant feature in the streetscape due to its prominence looking up the hill, this new apartment building will be lower in total height and narrower in overall width.”

Planning permission for the development had been granted in 2019, but this expired in October 2022.

Planning agent Chris Dance said: “Due to the economic circumstances which have prevailed since [2019] (and in particular the COVID 19 lockdown situation) it has not been able to commence the development.

“However, the intention is now to press ahead with implementing the permission and accordingly a fresh planning application is made to facilitate this.”

Bath and North East Somerset Council will aim to make a decision on whether to grant planning permission again by 22nd June.

You can view and comment on the application here.
