Oldfield Park Junior School is set to hold a celebration event today, Friday 4th July, to mark the first anniversary of its new playing field after a number of successful events during the year.
The playing field, purchased by Bath & North East Somerset Council, has meant that the school has been able to host home football matches and hold its annual sports day and play day on site for the first time.
Pupils have also planted over 400 trees and shrubs to create a new hedge and have grown their own food in the new raised beds. The field has retained two mature fruit trees and the school is looking at more opportunities for food production and education around growing.
The playing field came to fruition following a successful partnership between the school community and Bath and North East Somerset Council.
The event has been organised to thank everyone involved in the development, and takes place at the end of a special week of activities themed around healthy eating.
Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, Cllr Dine Romero (LibDem, Southdown) said: “We purchased land at the back of Oldfield Park Junior School because it was the only school in our area without a playing field or any grassed areas that pupils could use for sports or play.
“We worked with the school head and governors over a long period of time to bring about this much-needed provision and I’m delighted to see how it has transformed the school.”
Headteacher Marilyn Cole says: “This is a wonderful facility to have and we are looking at how we can link it into all that we do at the school.
“We have been very fortunate to have a committed team of parents and governors who, with the support from the Council, worked tirelessly to see this project through from start to finish.”
