Young people will be coming face-to-face with a wide range of leading employers at the Bath Skills Fair at the City of Bath College today.

People aged 15 to 25 have the chance to meet up with a wide range of local and national employers to find out about jobs, apprenticeships, training and voluntary work.

Companies including Rotork, Wessex Water, Ministry of Defence, Babington House, Sirona Care & Health and Miller Construction will be on hand to promote their latest vacancies.

A great way to hear about what companies can offer is to attend a series of talks. The talks are from 4pm-7pm on the second floor of the College’s Roper Building.

A talk and panel discussion entitled ‘An insight into careers in the creative industries in the digital age’ will highlight the breadth and depth of career opportunities in the industry currently estimated to be worth £8 million an hour to the UK economy.

Another talk will feature The Year in Industry (YINI) spreading the word about ‘paid gap years with a difference’ and how the placements in science, engineering, IT and business can enhance future career opportunities.

The City of Bath College team will also be giving talks on what is involved in an apprenticeship and where to look for vacancies.

Information and Guidance Co-ordinator Louise Croft said: “The Bath Skills Fair will see hundreds of young people visiting City of Bath College to get important advice on their next steps in education or work.

“Whether you are looking to study at college, university or find work, the Bath Skills Fair is an event you cannot afford to miss.”

There will also be a number of hands-on activities to encourage people to ‘have a go’ at new career ideas.

This includes generating your own pedal power to make a smoothie with B&NES Council, pipe-fitting with Curo, learning about resuscitation with the British Army and looking at insects under the microscope with Norton Radstock College.

Circomedia will be giving juggling workshops, Engineers Without Borders will be sharing how to build a wind turbine and bridge out of straws and Engage4Life will be putting your mixing and sampling skills to the test with DJ lessons.

Young people worried about the costs of university degrees can also meet with companies who could cover the cost of their studies.

Visitors to the event will also be able to find out more about what City of Bath College can offer them, including Higher Education study in partnership with leading universities.

Bath Spa University, the University of Gloucestershire and the University of West of England will have a wide range of information on the courses they provide.

Visitors will also be able to try stone carving, carpentry and flower arranging, and have their hair styled and enjoy a manicure or massage from beauty and complementary therapy students.

There will also be a number of competitions taking place and a stage featuring street theatre and music from BA1 Records. The line-up includes The Fade, Where’s Morocco?, Summoned By Ash, Unlucky Number, Phoenix Club and Rhys Coleman.

The Bath Skills Fair takes place at City of Bath College on Wednesday 12th March from 12noon to 7pm. For more information visit www.bathskillsfair.com.
