Four young stars in the making have been lighting up the airwaves this autumn with Bath City Sound, the community station based in Bath.
Under the mentorship of director and DJ Ian “Knocka” Dore they’ve been honing their skills to develop and present their own hour long shows.
Having graduated from the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme this summer, Jade, Jess, Saffy and Will wanted to carry on giving back to their local community.
Through their local provider Engage4Life they were given the opportunity to work with the local station, which all 4 grasped with great enthusiasm. Over 6 sessions they learnt production and interviewing skills, growing in confidence as these new found skills developed.
Being a particularly chatty threesome, Jade, Jess and Saffy have created their own talk show asking that eternal question “What is life?” They took a humorous look at funny anecdotes and quotes from the public, with the resulting show being so good they’ve been asked back to do another slot.
Jade explained that it had been a “great experience that has opened my eyes to how radio is produced and all the work that goes into it. I had a brilliant time and look forward to working in radio again in the future.”
Taking a different approach was Will, who has special needs, and has really come alive through the process. He’s put together an eclectic hour of music, talking us through his favourite tracks and why they mean so much to him.
Sarah O’Gorman from Engage4Life said: “To have access to professional radio training by credible radio professionals with a wealth of warmth, experience and talent, right here in Bath was superb. Bath City Sound are able to make a positive difference with youth groups and this is another fine example and the start of a long term relationship.”
Both exciting new shows will be launched by their hosts at the Bath and County Club on Friday the 8th November, giving the public their first opportunity to hear the great things they’ve been producing. In doing so they’ve demonstrated that when given the chance to express and develop themselves, young people can become role models of the community and find a positive voice in society.
Also present at the venue will be the teams currently going through the Autumn NCS programme with Engage4Life. Three of the young presenters have returned to the programme as Activity Tutors, helping the next group of young people to grow in themselves and give something back to their respective communities.
