Proposals for a new primary school for Bath are to be resubmitted to the Department for Education, after more information was requested on the planned 420-pupil development.

The application is to be resubmitted to the Department for Education

The New Bath Primary Trust did not succeed when it submitted its original application to open a new primary school focussed on the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects.

The Department stated that the case for a new primary school had been successfully made and they were impressed with the group of individuals and institutions behind the proposal.

Government officials also welcomed the focus on STEM subjects and Enterprise but asked for further information about the curriculum.

In response to feedback, the Trust is to strengthen the curriculum section of the application and resubmit the proposal this month.

Trust spokesman and City of Bath College Principal Matt Atkinson said: “We received some very positive feedback from government officials from the Department of Education including the fact that we had successfully managed to demonstrate that there was both a need and parental demand for this new school in Bath.

“Essentially what they have asked us to do is to strengthen our education plan to show how our focus on STEM will impact on the early years stage of primary education.

“Given the overall positive nature of the feedback we received we have decided to resubmit our application to the government in the October applications round.”

The school aims to focus on STEM and Enterprise but will cover a broad range of subjects including arts, sports, maths, literacy, IT, design and technology, and Spanish continuously from Reception to Year 6.

It will be the city’s first primary out of local authority control and is expected to be in a central Bath location to meet the greatest need.

It will also include a 20 place centre for children with Special Educational Needs.

The proposers of the new school are Beechen Cliff School, City of Bath College, Hayesfield School, Ralph Allen School, Three Ways School and the Wellsway Multi Academy Trust.
