Work has begun to stabilise the crumbling A431 Kelston Road between Bath and Bristol, with the roadworks taking place without the need to close the road.
Following erosion of the material under the road surface and the retaining wall of the A431, the Council are now working to repair and stabilise the carriageway.
The erosion is due to the intense run-off of water from adjacent land which runs underneath the ground.
Because of the extensive amount of water over recent weeks, this destabilised the ground underneath the highway.
A thorough investigation of the structure underneath the road and retaining wall by Council officers took place last week .
The complexity of stabilising the land underneath the road surface would normally require a lengthy road closure.
In this case, the Council have been able to use a method of injecting grout underneath the road to stabilise the structure of the road and retaining wall.
