The A36 near Bath has been closed for a number of hours following a serious collision between a van and a car this afternoon, with major delays being experienced across the area.

The crash took place at around 2.30pm this afternoon, near the junction to Hinton Charterhouse at Branch Road.

Motorists were turning around and heading back in the direction they came from the scene soon after the collision, with police now directing traffic away from the area.

Road users are being asked to used alternative routes and should allow extra time for their journeys.

There is a large amount of traffic across Bath due to the closure of the main route out of the city.

Details have not yet been released about the collision or the condition of the people involved.

More to follow…

5.52pm Update: Police have partially re-opened the road, with a stop go system in place while the second vehicle is recovered.
