A well used, popular walkway has been given a name to mark 25 years since the first homes were built in what’s commonly referred to as the ‘new estate’ of Peasedown St John.
The route, which connects the older part of the village and the Orchard Way housing estate, is used by hundreds of people every day.
The majority being parents and children walking to and from Peasedown’s 550 place primary school.
Over the summer, local councillors Nathan Hartley and Karen Walker carried out a consultation to ask residents what they wanted the road to be called.
Their proposal of ‘Bloomfield Way’ received lots of support.
Nathan said: “To be able to name this well-used walkway on the 25th anniversary of the extension of Peasedown St John is a great honour.
“This route connects more than 1,000 homes to the older part of the community, and has been paramount over the years in providing an easy, comfortable walkway between the two.
“We consulted on the name ‘Bloomfield Way’ as the route also provides vehicle access to Bloomfield Cottages and Bloomfield Terrace.”
Cllr Karen Walker, who chairs the Parish Council’s Planning and Environment Committee, said: “The Parish Council discussed this proposal and were only too pleased to support it.
“Peasedown St John is one united village, with a variety of services, shops and community amenities for everyone.
“Over the last 25 years, a lot of work has been done – namely by the school, churches and the recent addition Party in the Park to the annual calendar – to bring people together whichever part of the village they live in.”
The naming has also been welcomed by residents in Bloomfield Cottages for other reasons too.
The terrace of five houses, which are tucked away between Laxton Way and Bath Road, have often gone without post, parcels and other deliveries because couriers can’t find them.
Local resident Carrie Rossiter added: “We’ve been missed out for years by couriers and delivery companies because they can’t find where we are.
“It’s always been a frustration trying to explain where Bloomfield Cottages is, and how to get here. Now that the main route to our homes has been named, this will help us a lot in the future.”
Nathan and Karen would like to thank all the residents who took part in the consultation, along with Lyn Parfitt and Sheila Petherbridge at Bath and North East Somerset Council for their support with the project.
