Unemployed young people from Bath are being given the opportunity to get a taste of the outdoor life with a series of free City of Bath College courses.
The College is organising taster sessions to give people aged 16-18 the opportunity to experience practical outdoor and conservation activities.
There is also the chance for young people to carry out outdoor projects at Woodchester Mansion – a stunning 19th century Victorian Gothic property which the College’s stonemasons have been playing a key role in restoring.
The first taster session takes place on Wednesday 18th July at Bath City Farm from 1pm to 3.30pm. Visitors to the session will learn how to make bat boxes and lay paths.
The second taster session is at Southside Youth Centre on Thursday 19th July from 1pm to 3.30pm. Young people attending this session can try their hand at garden design and landscaping.
Visitors to both taster sessions will also be able to find out more about the free course at Woodchester Mansion, which takes place throughout August. The course will involve work on a range of projects sympathetic to the needs of the Grade 1 listed building including path building, fence making, clearance for conservation purposes and wildlife awareness.
Louise Croft, Information, Advice and Guidance Coordinator at City of Bath College, said: “This course and the accompanying taster sessions are aimed at young people who are unemployed and not in education or training. They will teach fun, hands-on activities and give young people the chance to get outside and learn new skills which they can then put into practice at the stunning Woodchester Mansion.
“Everyone who attends one of the taster sessions or who signs up to the course at Woodchester will receive advice and information to help them plan their next steps.”
