Young people are being encouraged to ‘have a go’ and try something new at a free skills taster event at the University of Bath on January 31st 2013 organised by the Council in partnership with City & Guilds and WorldSkills UK.
Those aged 14 – 24 will get the chance to try out a range of activities, including bricklaying, caring for a baby and creating renewable energy. The event aims to inspire young people to think about their future careers and increase their understanding of the workplace.
School groups from years 9 – 13 are invited to HAVE A GO, as are college students and young unemployed people. The free event forms two sessions, pre-booked school groups from 9.30am-3.30pm and then open to the general public from 4pm-7pm.
Councillor Cherry Beath (Lib Dem, Combe Down), Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said, “This is an excellent opportunity for young people to discover what interests them and to help shape their career interests beyond their education and training. Bath & North East Somerset Council recognises the value that the young people of today will bring our area of tomorrow. Supporting them to prepare for adult life is essential.
“Beyond bricks and mortar, the Council will be proactive alongside local Universities, Colleges and Job Centre Plus to develop worker skills, improve connections between employers and job seekers, and support the network of apprentices, interns, and undergraduate placement schemes. We cannot lose sight in the coming years of opportunity for new regeneration and development that the area’s greatest resource for economic prosperity is local people.”
Over 30 representatives from various occupations will be present on the day to offer their help and young people can also visit the Advice Zone for career guidance.
