The countdown to Christmas has started, and the Council is encouraging local people to remember to recycle over the festive period.

Households are recycling more at home than ever before, for three-quarters of us in the UK recycling is now a way of life. And the great news is that last year, local residents recycled over 52% of household waste in Bath and North East Somerset.

Christmas is a time for entertaining and the Council is helping everyone to recycle extra plastic bottles, tubs and trays, metal cans, glass bottles and jars, batteries and cardboard by keeping collections going during the festive season.

There are no waste or recycling collections on:

  • Tuesday 25th December – next collection day Saturday 29th December
  • Wednesday 26th December – next collection day Wednesday 2nd January 2013
  • Tuesday 1st January – next collection day Saturday 5th January 2013.

There are no garden waste and Christmas tree collections for 2 weeks from Monday 24th December. Normal fortnightly collections will begin again on Monday 7th January 2013.

Usual winter opening times for local recycling centres from November to the end of March are:

  • Monday to Friday 8am – 4.15pm
  • Saturday 9am – 3.45pm
  • Sunday 9am – 1pm

Over the Christmas period, these will have certain closures:

  • Tuesday 25th December – Closed
  • Wednesday 26th December – Closed
  • Tuesday 1st January 2013 – Closed

The amount of wrapping paper estimated to be thrown away in the UK at Christmas could stretch around the equator nine times or to the moon if each sheet was laid end to end. Every year the UK throws out an estimated 4,500 tonnes of tin foil over the Christmas period. This is enough to cover around 1500 square miles – roughly the size of Suffolk. But wrapping paper (white backed non foil types) greeting cards, gift tags and aluminium foil can be recycled in your green box.

You can make full use of your food waste recycling collections for all food waste including bones. For tips to save money and cut down your food waste this Christmas visit www.lovefoodhatewaste

If Bath suffers from bad weather this winter please check the Council website www.bathnes.gov.uk/wasteservices and local radio for the latest collection updates.
