A 71-year-old woman was rescued from the waters below North Parade bridge yesterday evening after apparently jumping off the side and into the river.

Reports first came in at around 5pm yesterday when police were alerted to someone being spotted in the fast flowing water under the bridge.

The bridge was closed for two hours as emergency services attended the scene and police officers rescued the woman from the water below.

The woman was rushed to the Royal United Hospital in Weston via road ambulance in a serious condition.

She remains in a critical condition this morning.
