The Rastafari Council of Britain will deliver a special public lecture at Bath Spa University on the evening of Wednesday 6th March.

The lecture, entitled ‘Rastafari: An African Enlightenment Project’, will be the third in a series of public talks organised for ‘The Forum’. The Forum, an interfaith project set up by Bath Spa Students Union’s Religions & Beliefs Representative Simon Jilley in September 2012, was awarded funding from the NUS Interfaith Initiatives Fund last November in order to support putting on this series of public talks.
The event will tie in with two further events in the same week in support of Fairfield House in Newbridge. The house owes its prominence due to Haile Selassie, messiah to the Rastafari community, residing in the house for five years whilst in exile from 1936-1941.
The house was bought by Haile Selassie and donated to the city of Bath to provide care to the elderly, thus functioning as a care home until 1993, but when new governmental regulations came in the house became instead a day centre for elderly ethnic minority residents. At the current time, the house is constantly seeking funding as the Council struggles to fund its upkeep.
Following the evening lecture on Wednesday 6th, there will be a roots reggae dance at the Banglo nightclub on Lower Bristol Road. This event is being dubbed by Sarah Kanan, the organiser, as ‘the biggest roots dance in a long time in Bath’. Doors will open at 10pm and close at 3am, with entry of £4, payable on the door, going towards the upkeep of Fairfield House.
Miss Kanan, who also volunteers at Bath Spa Students’ Union as the Environment & Ethics Officer, has likewise organised an Open Day at Fairfield House for the following Saturday. A series of talks, workshops, therapies and live music acts have been arranged through the day of Saturday 9th March. The events are due to start at 11am, and will continue until 5.30pm. A vegan lunch will be available by donation from 1pm.
The Rastafari Council of Britain, who are an organisation prominent to the Rastafari community in Britain, will deliver the lecture ‘Rastafari: An African Enlightenment Project’ in the Newton G02 lecture theatre on Bath Spa University’s Newton Park campus from 7-9pm on Wednesday 6th March. Light refreshments will be available, and there will be a donation bucket on the evening in order to collect funds for the upkeep of Fairfield House.
