Determined students rowed the equivalent of the English Channel and back again to reduce the cost of their end of year celebration.
The Sport and Exercise Science BTEC Level 3 students ‘travelled’ 52 miles in a total of six hours, 20 minutes and eight seconds.
The energetic group of 15 students took it in turns to put in the distance on two rowing machines at the gym at City of Bath College.
They were sponsored to take part in the cross-channel rowing challenge and raised a total of more than £150.
The money raised will go towards the Sport Celebration Dinner at the Bath Hilton Hotel on June 14th. More than 100 students will be invited to the black tie awards-ceremony.
Student Joe Skipper, 20, said: “I really enjoyed doing the sponsored row as everyone worked well as a team.
“It was harder than we thought; I now have a lot more respect for rowers.”
17-year-old Harry Lee joked: “I wouldn’t call it enjoyable; in fact it was quite painful.
“This is one of the few times I would have probably preferred to be in lectures, the pain really hurt, my quads and biceps were killing me!”
Sport lecturer Hollie Greenaway said the students had worked hard to help cover the costs of the department’s first Celebration Dinner.
She said: “We wanted to do some fundraising to reduce the cost of the Celebration Dinner for students.
“The sponsored row was a tough challenge for them, but they motivated each other and worked really hard.
“They are now really looking forward to the big night. It’s a great way for us all to get together as we don’t celebrate student achievements enough.”
