It’s the highlight of the fundraising calendar at City of Bath College with five days of activities from the sensible to the absurd.
Raise And Give (RAG) Week is in full swing at the College with students trying to raise money and awareness for local good causes.
From collecting donations dressed in the wackiest clobber to gunking each other, this week’s RAG calendar is jam-packed with huge amounts of fun.
The students are raising money for two charities; Make A Wish, which grants the wishes of terminally ill children, and the Bristol Children’s Help Society, which provides holidays for disadvantaged children.
Students’ Union RAG Officer Dan Templer said the College’s annual RAG Week was always a popular event.
He said: “It’s a busy week, we have lots planned and everyone works hard to make sure all the events go smoothly.
“The target this year is to raise more than £1,000 for our chosen two charities, and that often involves making fools of ourselves, but it’s ok as it is for charity. RAG is all about bringing the College closer to the charities in our community.”
The week kicked off with students selling sandwiches and pizzas donated by local companies.
Dan has spent much of Tuesday dressed as a Panda walking around the College selling raffle tickets to staff and students. The prizes up for grabs include restaurant and paintball vouchers, theatre tickets and designer handbags.
The 10 committee members have been set a challenge to collect at least £25 each in donations and the eight students who bring in the lowest amounts will “get a bucketful over their heads.” The gunk will be made up of a mixture of baked beans, flour, custard and cat food.
Dan, who has already resigned himself to being gunked, said: “Hopefully it will be quick, and then I’ll go for a shower straight away.”
The fun and games continue today with a lunchtime cake sale and the students will be rolling up their sleeves to wash the cars of lecturers and directors on Friday. Up to 20 students will be charging £5 to wash cars in the staff car park.
The car wash will also tie in with Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day. Also in aid of Comic Relief at the College, Finance & Payroll staff will be dressing up and the Sports Department has organised a dodge ball tournament.
