History students from Bath Spa University have co-curated an exhibition called Bristol Urban Sport in partnership with staff from Bristol Museums, Galleries and Archives and Bristol City Council.
Bristol Urban Sport opens on Tuesday 22 May 2012 at M Shed, Bristol’s flagship Museum on the dockside. The exhibition runs until 9 September 2012 and is free to attend. To celebrate the arrival of the Olympic Torch in the city on 22 May, the exhibition will stay open late on the opening night until 9pm.
Bristol Urban Sport explores the relationship between the fabric of the city and sport over the last 200 years. The exhibition reveals how the people of Bristol have manipulated both the natural landscape and man-made architecture for sporting activity.
The students have interviewed a range of people from local groups and clubs and identified photographs, memorabilia, objects and film that will feature in the exhibition.
Bath Spa University student Alice Bowring said: “We’ve been working on this project for about 8 months. It’s been really interesting to learn about how an exhibition is put together, and we’ve all developed lots of new skills.”
Becky Petersfrom Bristol Museum, Galleries and Archives said: “It’s been great to work with Bath Spa University students on developing this exhibition and they’ve uncovered some really fascinating stories.”
The exhibition has been awarded the Inspire Mark, which recognises and supports outstanding projects taking place around the UK that are providing new opportunities for young people and their communities as a result of the Games.
The project is supported by RELAYS, a London 2012 legacy project based in universities across the South West that aims to inspire young people to volunteer, try new sports and be creative. RELAYS is funded by Legacy Trust UK, an independent charity set up to help build a lasting cultural and sporting legacy from the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
An exciting programme of events, talks and family activities will run alongside the exhibition. Please visit the M Shed website for further information: http://mshed.org/whats-on/
