Anyone inspired by the Paralympics can try out a range of specially-adapted bikes with cycling sessions organised by the Council this autumn.
If you would like to ride a bike but can’t easily ride a standard two wheeler, the Council’s Wheels for All scheme can give you the opportunity to ride an adapted bike in a safe environment. Different bikes are available such as hand bikes, trikes and reclining bikes. Various adjustments and adaptions can be made to the seats and pedals to accommodate your needs.
Bath & North East Somerset Council is running the open sessions this autumn for people with a disability to come and give cycling a go. Sessions are on a drop-in basis to give the opportunity to try different bikes and get used to gentle exercise. There is a nominal charge of £4 per person. Parents, siblings and carers are also welcome to join in the sessions.
The sessions are planned to run on Tuesdays from 3:30-5pm at Odd Down Playing Fields Car Park, Chelwood Drive, Odd Down, Bath, on 25 September and 2, 9, 16 and 23 October.
Councillor Dine Romero (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Cabinet Member for Early Years, Children and Youth, said: “We’ve all seen the tremendous efforts by our Paralympic athletes recently and although we don’t all compete at that level, Bath & North East Somerset Council is keen to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to enjoy a healthy lifestyle and participate in sports and leisure activities.
“Our range of adapted bikes, tricycles and scooters offer activities that are both physically and mentally stimulating and, above all, offer fun for everyone involved.”
The Wheels for All sessions will take place subject to there being enough interest and suitable weather. Please book in advance by calling Eugene Kertzman, Wheels for All worker on 0797 491 8718 or email [email protected]. Visit www.bathnes.gov.uk/wheelsforall for more information.
