An impressive line-up of speakers from both social and traditional media will gather at Bath Spa University on Friday 20 April for a major conference to explore and challenge the image of children and young people in the UK media.
Childhood and the Media: Images, Rights and Responsibilities will scrutinise various aspects of children’s representation and rights as well as the media’s responsibilities and regulations.
Speakers include Elisabeth Ribbans, Managing Editor of the Guardian; Simon Milner, UK Head of Policy at Facebook; Naomi Gummer, UK Public Policy Analyst at Google; Sue Steel, Coordinator of the Anti-Bullying Alliance; and Dr Fleur Fisher, Chair of the Teenage Magazine Arbitration Panel.
The event is the fourth in a series of conferences on child protection and safeguarding hosted by David Niven Associates in partnership with Bath Spa University.
Aimed at anyone working with children and young people, particularly social care and education professionals, the event will examine why all too often the media portrays the young in a negative light and how this image can have a direct impact on helping and protecting them.
Professor Stephen Ward, Dean of Bath Spa University’s School of Education, said: “Our Childhood and the Media conference is an important date in the diary for anyone working with children and young people or concerned about their increasingly negative portrayal in the media.
“It will be a very interactive event with a number of opportunities to work with other professionals on a number of key issues, such as how we share the experiences of looked after children without exposing them individually and the role of schools in protecting children both in the real and online world.”

Childhood and the Media: Images, Rights and Responsibilities takes place on Friday 20 April from 9.15am until 4pm at the Michael Tippet Centre, Bath Spa University.
