An alcohol awareness projected created by Radstock-based PC Simon Selby and secondary school pupils in Bath has taken second place in the National Crimebeat Awards.
The project, called Under the Influence, educated young people about the impact and dangers of drinking.
It was created after students told PC Selby that alcohol abuse was one of the biggest issues for young people.
Students from Somervale School in Midsomer Norton, Ralph Allen and Culverhay in Bath and Broadlands in Keynsham travelled with PC Selby to London to receive the award from former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Paul Condon.
As part of the project, students interviewed the parents of a 21-year-old man who died after being punched in an unprovoked attack outside a club in Midsomer Norton.
PC Selby said: “Sometimes a young person may be in a situation where a friend has had too much to drink and is in danger. This project tells people exactly what to do in certain situations and this can save lives. In many cases young people die because their friends did not know what how to react in a crisis.
“It is a powerful resource to help youngsters. It is now being used in schools across the country to help teenagers and teachers to address the problem of alcohol abuse.“
