The Roman Baths has been nominated in the European Museum of the Year 2012 Award.
The heritage attraction, which welcomed nearly 1million worldwide visitors last year, is in competition with 45 other venues across Europe for the coveted title.
The prestigious award, founded in 1977 with the support of the Council of Europe, is presented to the museum which contributes most directly to attracting audiences and satisfying its visitors with unique atmosphere, imaginative interpretation and presentation, a creative approach to education and social responsibility.
Councillor Cherry Beath (Lib-Dem, Combe Down), Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “Just to be nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award is a tremendous honour.
“It reflects Bath & North East Somerset Council’s commitment to keeping the Roman Baths a favourite among visitors by making improvements such as modern interpretation, helping people to imagine life in Roman Bath; conservation that improves the look of the monument and protects it for future generations, and a wide range of access measures including new lifts and inclusive interpretation. These recent improvements have helped the Roman Baths to have its most successful year, in terms of visitor numbers, for a generation.”
The nomination follows on from the Roman Baths’ triumphs earlier this year with a Silver Merit Award of Excellence from the Irish tourism industry and a Highly Commended for offering the Access for All in the South West Tourism Excellence Awards.
The European Museum of the Year 2012 Award will be announced on 19 May 2012.
