The vision of a recently formed Trust aiming to make the river Avon more accessible to the public took a step further at last week’s City conference in Bath with the endorsement of the council Chairman Rob Appleyard.
Cllr Appleyard said: “It’s high time our river was made more accessible to the general public – waterways can enhance our lives in so many ways”.
The Trust will bring much needed river based redevelopment along 30 km of waterway focussing first on Keynsham’s Broadmead Peninsular and clean energy projects such as the Archimedes Screw at Pulteney Weir.
Trust Chairman Geoff Dunford told a Full Council meeting in March that the Avon’s potential has been ignored for many years: “Our aim is simple: to reconnect communities to the River Avon”.
The Trust’s additional remit will be to clean up the river banks, encourage greater leisure use of the river, and look at the viability of River Taxis.
The River Regeneration Trust is keen to maximise community engagement, and welcomes the public’s views on the potential of our waterways.
