A number of new trees have been planted in The Archery Field in Weston by the Council, thanks to the efforts of local residents who raised £550.00 to fund the replanting programme.
Residents were left upset in November after an Austrian Pine at the corner of Archery Field fell down and so Annabel Mottershead asked neighbours of the field to donate some money towards a replanting project, which many of them did.
Annabel, who is the Gardener at Kingswood Prep school, said, “I recently planted, a “walk” of London Plane trees at Kingswood, which was funded by donations from parents and I realised that the residents of Bath really understand the importance of the landscape that they live in.”
Local people from Weston Park, Weston Park West and members of the Weston Gardening Club also supported the project. Some residents wanted to plant a tree in memory of their parents, whilst those at Vale Lodge were keen to replace the huge Pine that they lost last year.
Following the successful fundraising efforts, Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Arboricultural Officer Mark Cassidy ordered Redwoods, Cedars and Pines, to fit the historic evergreen landscape of the surrounding large gardens.
Mark said, “The new trees will provide a link to the foresight and vision of Sir Jerome Murch, who was three times Mayor of Bath and received a lot of newly introduced tree species, which he planted at his house at Cranwells. He also went on to plant the Great Dell in Royal Victoria Park, which was the forerunner to the Botanical Gardens.”
