Avon and Somerset Police’s horses Broadmead and Clifton made an arresting sight in the playground of St Michael’s junior school in Twerton when they made a special educational visit last week.
It was arranged by Twerton beat manager PC Adrian Secker, who’s also a governor there.
Broadmead and Clifton were first introduced to elderly residents of Cleeve Court care home, and pre-school children at the nearby First Steps centre.
Then it was on to the junior school where the pupils had the chance to talk to the mounted police officers PC Gary Young and DC Helen du Heaume.
Broadmead, they learned, is 14 years old, hungry all the time and prone to be a bit grumpy.
Clifton, 13 years old, is lively, cheeky and mischievous and very sociable with people.
The children were then encouraged to pat and stroke the horses before returning for more routine classroom lessons.
Year Three teacher Carol Watts said: “It was really nice for the police to bring their beautiful horses to see us. The children were obviously fascinated and asked some very interesting questions. It’s a lesson I’m sure they’ll never forget.“
