Young people and youth workers in Peasedown St John are celebrating after being given £20,000 to develop their local youth centre.
The money has been used to refurbish the well-used art room at Peasedown Youth Centre, so many more young people can develop their artistic talents.
After several months of designing, planning and craftsmanship, last week the new art room was officially opened by local B&NES Councillor Nathan Hartley (Lib Dem).
He said: “At a time when councils are cutting spending across the country, the Lib Dems who run B&NES council are investing more in frontline services for young people.
“Every time I visit the youth centre I’m always impressed by the outstanding pieces of art I see, all of which have been created by teenagers living in our village and the surrounding area.
“I know this money has been put to good use. Youth Leader Bridie Marshall, and her staff and volunteers do a fantastic job to ensure our young people have the best possible opportunities and chances available to them.
“It’s a great example of the benefits of a state-funded, state-run youth service.”
In attendance at the opening of the new facility were local young people, Peasedown St John Parish Councillors and the Chairman of B&NES Council, Cllr Rob Appleyard.
Cllr Hartley said the event had a particular significance to him. He added; “Ironically, this new art room was the location of my pre-school 25 years ago. It was so good to see it’s still making a difference in young people’s lives a quarter of a century later.”
