The campaign in Peasedown St John for cleaner streets has continued with the installation of a new litter bin in the area.
Over the last 12 months local councillors and residents have been working together on a range of initiatives to clean up the community. These have included environmental clean-up days, Lola Callow’s ‘Please Pick Up Your Poo’ campaign, and Dog Watch – which saw Cllr Nathan Hartley and residents out at 6am to catch irresponsible dog walkers who allowed their dogs to foul.
Local resident Jenny Reynolds said: “We have worked hard over the last 12 months to tackle dog fouling, and now over a slow period of time things are starting to change.
“Dog walkers are starting to take more responsibility over their dogs that foul and more people are using litter bins to dispose of their rubbish.”
Last week B&NES Council’s Environmental Services team installed a new litter bin in the Wellow Lane/Wellow Tyning area after many years of continual requests and pleas from residents and councillors to do so.
Jenny added: “This new litter bin has been on the waiting list for two years. It’s been ideally positioned in an area where people walk often with their families and dogs. Hopefully, our days of seeing messy streets are almost over.”
Due to funding cuts and reduced council budgets, no money was available from Environmental Services to purchase the bin. So, instead Peasedown Councillor Nathan Hartley (Lib Dem) agreed to spend £474 from his Ward Initiative Fund.
Nathan said: “One of the big issues in Wellow Tyning during the 2011 local election campaign was litter. Residents said that more needed to be done to tackle it and encourage people to take more responsibility by cleaning up after themselves.
“In response, I’ve led a number of clean up initiatives around the estate, and I do hope now this new litter bin will make all the difference.”
