Motorists using local car parks will now have the additional option to pay for their parking using their mobile phones, thanks to the introduction of a new system.
The newly adopted system, MiPermit, removes the need to have the correct change ready and allows you to extend your parking time without having to return to your car.
New signs in the Council’s car parks provide instructions on how to use the system; you can register via automated phone call, text message or online. In addition, smartphone users can download a free MiPermit app, which identifies your location, making paying to park even easier.
Alternatively if you prefer to save time, then you can also register in advance, via the MiPermit app, through the Council’s MiPermit portal or direct at www.MiPermit.com.
You can also opt for the system to send you a text reminder when your parking is due to run out. Then if you are delayed or wish to stay longer, you can use your phone to top up your parking time. There is a 10p convenience charge for using the system but no additional conditional fees are payable if you extend your stay and there’s no need to return to the car park in the meantime.
Councillor Caroline Roberts (Lib-Dem, Newbridge), Cabinet Member for Transport, said:” As a Council we’re always keen to make services more attractive and flexible, and offering people the ability to pay for their parking by mobile phone or app is a great alternative to saving up coins. This system is one of the most advanced of its kind in the country and will help bring our parking services into the twenty-first century.”
The system will also shortly be rolled out to the on street Pay & Display locations.
The Council were criticised on Twitter over the weekend after a number of pay and display machines were installed, with temporary pricing left on display. The prices shown were supposed to be removed.
@bathnes Saw the new parking machines at Vic Park. Min £5.40 for 4hrs is disgusting. Aimed at Park visitors? @nowbath twitter.com/louise_wain/st…

The Council responded by saying: “Apologies we haven’t covered these machines up. They will be in service next week. Prices will be different.”
