Paralympians Do Special Charity Swim

Paralympic swimmers are taking part in a sponsored swim at the University of Bath to raise money for an inspirational charity that raises money to help seriously ill or disabled children enjoy the holiday of a lifetime.

Two teams will complete the 4 1/2 hour swimming challenge in the 50m pool at the Sports Training Village on Sunday in the Dreamflight Generations for Generations sponsored swim.

They aim to raise £3,500 for the charity Dreamflight – enough money to send one child on a trip to Orlando with the charity. The nine hours of swimming represent the nine activity filled days children will experience on their trip.

The swim is organised by University of Bath Swimming Club member Liz Johnson, who has competed at three Paralympic Games, winning gold, silver and bronze medals. Now a patron of the charity, she was a Dreamflight child in 1997 and is keen to help others enjoy the same experience.

“I’d like to thank the University of Bath for kindly donating the lane space for the swim. I know from my own experience what a terrific opportunity a Dreamflight holiday can be,” said Liz.

Liz will team up with Athens 2004 Paralympian David Hill, another former Dreamflighter, and by Brazilian Paralympian Phelipe Rodrigues, a silver medalist at London 2012, for the swim.

They are likely to be joined by multi-Paralympic medal winning swimmer Nyree Kindred, who trained in Bath ahead of the Sydney 2000 Games.

A group of former Dreamflighters including children, escorts and helpers will also tackle the challenge, which is scheduled to get underway at 11am on Sunday.
