Bath has always been big on the fitness scene with its array of gyms, spas and Boot Camps, but there’s one new company that’s set to stir the marketplace with some rather innovative offerings, and it’s called Gymfit.
Founded by personal trainer and competitive sportsman Nigel Ashman, Gymfit offers a total wellbeing service to its select client group (namely those put off by busy gyms and aggressively pushy trainers!)
There’s the option of one-to-one personal training or even its 14 day equivalent, the Body Blitz. For those experimenting with home workouts, or working towards particular fitness events, there’s the option to hire your own gym equipment. And for those looking for life-changing results, Gymfit even designs and installs home and workplace gyms, project managing the process throughout.
Nigel kindly took some time out to offer NOW Bath readers an insight into the brand and his healthy living philosophies…
What inspired you to launch Gymfit?
It was a natural development to my existing personal training business and it was fuelled by the demand of my client base for a more rounded and complete service.
How does your own sporting background influence your coaching style?
Having played many team sports in addition to the solitary sports of running, duathlon and triathlon, I have personal experience of how you can adapt your body shape to fit your activity of choice. In other words, changing your body shape is something that’s simple to do, as long as you know how.
Are you always a healthy eater?
I’ve always been fortunate to eat and enjoy healthy food. Unhealthy food is more of a habit and if you don’t get into the habit you don’t have to break it.
What’s your biggest vice and how do you stop yourself from overindulging?
Like everybody in life the odd kettle chip passes my lips, however, I’m a great believer in the 80/20 rule – it’s just getting it the right way round.
How do you keep motivated throughout the winter months?
By reading sporting literature and planning my next racing event; it also helps knowing that spring is around the corner, when you’ll feel so good from those winter training hours that you’ve put in.
Describe a typical working day…
Each day begins with a 6am walk with the dog, with the rest of the morning comprising a range of personal training sessions – some indoors, some outdoors, which is most often followed by an on-the-go lunch. A typical afternoon consists of meeting with people who are looking at embracing my Body Blitz program or talking to those who are interested in developing their own gyms.
What do you most enjoy about your job?
Nothing gives greater satisfaction than receiving a text or email from a client saying how much they enjoyed their training session with me and how much better they feel.
How do you spend a free day?
I love the escapism of training with my wife and often combine this with a good hundred mile bike ride around the Cotswold countryside.
What do you most love about Bath?
On the occasions I get to stop off in town, it’s hard to beat a Chandos coffee. A wander into the city’s bike shops can make for an expensive stop off, and I really enjoy the regular route around Victoria Park with Charlie the Springer.
