New Cleaning Vehicles Hit The Streets

The latest in street cleansing technology will be cleaning paths, roads, and gutters following investment in two new vehicles for Keynsham, Saltford, and the Somer Valley.

The new vehicle which covers Keynsham and Saltford uses four brushes to clear the streets, including a wide sweep brush that can sweep the full width of the machine. In Midsomer Norton and Radstock, the new vehicle operates two brushes and is one of Europe’s most successful compact sweepers. The brushes can also be used to sweep snow and spread grit during adverse weather conditions.

Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said, “This new equipment purchased by Bath & North East Somerset Council will improve the cleanliness of local streets and enable our street cleaners to operate even more efficiently.

“Although all of our Neighbourhood Teams are working hard to maintain street cleanliness, the first line of defence against litter is people themselves. If everyone disposed of their litter responsibly in bins the streets would be much cleaner in the first place.”

The new vehicles are part of the Council’s investment in new cleansing vehicles and equipment which totals £500,000 over the past two years.

Wayne Honey, South & West Neighbourhoods Team Manager, said, “Both vehicles have a better capacity for collecting litter and detritus so will be sweeping for longer periods of time. It also means less fuel cost because we don’t need to travel to our transfer station so often to unload. These vehicles are purpose made for the environments in which they will be operating.”
