Picking up bags full up other people’s rubbish has reiterated to students the importance of not dropping litter.
The Level 1 Access To Building Services Engineering students from City of Bath College spent about three hours clearing up the banks of the River Avon, off Newbridge Road.
The seven students rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty after Bath and North East Somerset Council requested their help.
They worked alongside council workers and volunteers to clear a ten metre square section of land next to The Boathouse pub. This included picking up litter and cutting back the vegetation on the footpath and steps leading down to the river.
The students filled more than five bin bags up with discarded items such as car seat covers, dirty nappies and countless beer bottles.
Simon Robinson, lecturer and Refrigeration Learning Coordinator, said the litter-pick had drummed home the message that students should keep their community clean and tidy.
He said: “There was a lot of litter, overgrown vegetation and debris and the students weren’t very keen when they first saw the state of the area. But they got to work and were impressed with the difference they made.
“It will definitely make them think twice about dropping litter in the future. They now have first-hand experience of the time and effort it takes to clear up other people’s mess.”
City of Bath College is to continue to work with the council to clean up other beauty spots over the coming months.
