Litter picking volunteers in Westmoreland came out in force last week in the latest effort by people to clean-up their communities and make them proud places to live.
Five large bags of litter were cleared during the early evening in one hour last week. Fifteen people turned up, including members of the local scouts. The effort was organised by Councillor June Player (Ind, Westmoreland) and took place at Brickfields. The Council provided equipment and took away the collected litter.
Local Scout Leader Andy Dyer had got in touch with Councillor Player to ask whether 51st Troop could play a part in supporting the local On-Board Community Project. He said, “Our Troop were really keen to take part in improving the appearance of the community. This activity will go towards their Community Challenge Award. We were very pleased to work alongside local residents who also feel so strongly about the local environment.”
Councillor Player added, “A litter pick is a great way to bring the community together and I was really pleased this one was so successful. We chose Brickfields because a local resident approached me wanting the state of the play area improved and due to the fact there is no traffic to contend with the litter picking was safe and straightforward. I’d like to thank the Scouts and local residents who got involved. The Scouts enjoyed the experience and I hope they can do others in the future.”
Play your part in keeping your community tidy…
The Council is keen to support any group of people to improve the appearance of their community. Upon arrangement, its Neighbourhood Teams will work with people to provide the necessary equipment, such as gloves, tabards, and litter pickers. It will also arrange for the litter collected to be taken away.
Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said, “If communities come forward to us with ideas on how they want to keep their streets clean and tidy, Bath & North East Somerset Council will work out the best way to support them. We are positive about working with others and will support people with the equipment and help that they need.”
