Avon and Somerset Police in Bath are concerned about a rise in the number of thefts of tools from builders vans – and are urging owners to take more security measures to protect their property.

Since April 1st this year, there have been 31 reported offences in the Bath area. The thieves are targeting expensive tools and plant machinery from vehicles – some while they were parked on building sites during the day and some overnight.

Police say that owners should mark all tools prominently and keep a record of their serial numbers. All tools should be removed from vehicles overnight where possible and a notice – now available to pick up from Bath police station – displayed saying there are no valuables left inside.

When working on site, it is advised that vehicles should be parked in a secure area or in view. They should be locked and a minimum amount of tools left inside.
