The Joy of Hooping is getting into the festive spirit by offering free and low cost hula hoop classes and events in Bath to get you warm and moving during the cold season. Hoop dance has been hailed as the new Zumba – the sessions will give people a chance to get a hoop on and see if it’s their kind of exercise.

“Hooping delivers a total-body workout that can improve flexibility and balance while strengthening the back, abdominal, arm, and leg muscles,” says Cedric X. Bryant, PhD, chief scientific officer of ACE.

Hoop dance uses more than just your waist; classes use specially made adult size weighted hoops and teach how to hoop on different parts if the body, working core muscles, legs, arms and raising heart rate. Earlier this year the American Council on Exercise(ACE) study showed hoop workouts can burn as many calories per minute as step aerobic or boot camp, word is out that it’s a lot more fun. Sally who’s been going to classes in Clifton says:

“It’s been really fun; I’ve learned tricks I never thought I would have in just a few weeks. We always feel encouraged and the music is great too!”

Wednesday 7th December there is a free taster session of a hoop dance class at DanceSpace Bristol, followed by a Xmas “Hoop Jam” – time to dance with the hoop, meet people, share skills and mince pies on Tuesday 13th December, 7.30pm at Christ Church School, Clifton and another hoop jam at Percy Community Centre in Bath on Thursday 15th from 8pm. Entry to the hoop jam sessions is £2, hoops are provided and some of the special fitness hoops will be available to buy. Space is limited so book in advance by email: [email protected] or call/text 07989411573.
