The number of new homes built in the Bath area last year was 460, of which 250 were affordable homes for local people – a strong performance considering the recession and current state of the construction industry.
This brings the number of homes built since 2006 to 2,600. The Council has a target of 11,500 by 2026. A substantial number of homes are expected to be delivered over the next five years in locations across the district.
Councillor Tim Ball (Lib-Dem, Twerton), Cabinet Member for Homes and Planning, said, “Solid progress is being made on increasing the number of decent homes in the private and social sector through Bath & North East Somerset Council working with housing developers and housing associations, especially when considering the national economic picture.
“Our area urgently needs new homes to offer local people places to live who would otherwise have to move away from their families and places of work to find accommodation. Housing is also needed because without somewhere for their staff to live, new businesses are less likely to consider wanting to relocate to our area. At the same time as boosting the supply of housing, the Council is protecting the Green Belt.”
In Bath:
- The redevelopment of Somer Housing stock in at Day Crescent in Twerton and Southlands in Weston were recently completed.
- Crest Nicholson’s initial phase of 300 apartments at Bath Riverside is regenerating the river corridor – many more homes will follow;
- The MOD sites will create over 1000 homes with 35% as affordable housing and the first sales and tenancies could be secured in 2015.
