People are being encouraged to have their say about guidance to protect and manage the setting of the World Heritage Site when development is proposed.

The guidance is being put forward by the Council as a Supplementary Planning Document that will support policies in the Local Plan and Core Strategy once it is adopted. The document is intended for use by:

  • Developers, agents and development management planners;
  • Landowners and managers of land when considering proposals for change and when considering management operations;
  • Residents and visitors in adding to their understanding of the relationship of the surroundings of Bath to the city.

Councillor Tim Ball (Lib-Dem, Twerton), Cabinet Member for Homes and Planning, said, “The landscape of Bath and its surroundings contribute significantly to the special character of the World Heritage Site. The protection of this setting preserves the historic importance of the city which in turn contributes directly to the local economy across the whole district.

“The purpose of this document that Bath & North East Somerset Council is consulting upon is to provide sensible, straightforward guidance about how development can take place without compromising the strength and qualities of the World Heritage Site. We hope that people come forward with their views so that our Site can be managed effectively for local people both present and future.”

How to have your say…

The Council is seeking views from people about the document and particularly whether it has covered all the key aspects of managing the World Heritage Site setting. The consultation runs from Monday 28th May to Friday 6th July 2012.

For more information about the consultation and to view the document and a consultation form please see http://www.bathnes.gov.uk/settingofbath.

Copies of the draft Supplementary Planning Document are available for public inspection in: The One Stop Shop, 3-4 Manvers Street, Bath BA1 1JQ; The Hollies, Midsomer Norton, Bath, BA3 2DP; Riverside, Temple Street, Keynsham, Bristol, BS31 1LA and at all the public libraries within the District including the mobile libraries.
