Visitors to the Roman Baths can enjoy a torch-lit evening of music from across the ages, as part of the Museums at Night celebrations in May.
People of all ages are welcome to enjoy a musical tour through history – featuring early music on an ancient lyre, medieval hurdy gurdy and modern jazz – on Saturday 18th May, from 6pm to 9pm (last entry 8pm).
The enchanting music performances will take place around the magnificent setting of the 2,000-year-old Roman Baths – illuminated by the light of flickering torches. Enjoy the sound of the lyre by the Temple Pediment, smooth jazz at the side of the Great Bath and medieval tunes by the King’s Bath.
Councillor Cherry Beath (Lib-Dem, Combe Down), Cabinet Member for Sustainable Development, said: “As darkness falls, the remains of the vast Roman complex take on a unique atmosphere. Bath & North East Somerset Council is delighted to offer this wonderful experience for people to enjoy and learn more about this magnificent piece of history. With its steaming waters and Roman artefacts, the Roman Baths is a truly magical place to visit at nightfall.
“We hope our residents and visitors will take this special opportunity to explore the Roman Baths along with the whole host of other local heritage attractions taking part in Museums at Night 2013.”
The Pump Room will be open for dinner on Saturday 18th May for Museums at Night (last orders 9pm). Tables can be reserved by ringing 01225 444477. For music lovers, the restaurant will continue to open in the evenings during the Bath International Music Festival (22nd May – 2nd June).
As part of Museums at Night 2013, hundreds of museums, galleries, libraries, archives and heritage sites across the country will unlock their doors for special evening events from Thursday 16th to Saturday 18th May.
