Engineering design students at City of Bath College have been set the challenge of building a vehicle that can transport an adult – but powered only by a cordless electric drill.
The Extended Diploma in Engineering Design students were set the tricky challenge as part of their final year project.
The students had to create a vehicle which could be steered and included a gearbox. It had to be built using materials which could be found at the College, although gears and ball/roller bearings could be purchased.
The strict rules have seen the budding engineers get creative to build their range of weird and wonderful vehicles.
Materials used in the designs have included a bicycle wheel as well as broken chairs and an old ladder salvaged from a skip at the College.
A single Erbauer drill was then attached to each of the vehicles as the only source of power.
Fred Bumford, Engineering tutor at City of Bath College, said: “This was a very challenging engineering project and I’ve been so impressed with how well all the students have done.
“They’ve had to be very creative and some of their designs, especially the complicated steering mechanisms, have been inspired.”
This project marks the end of the students’ time at College. Many are heading on to university, while others will begin apprenticeships or work.
