The driver of a recovery truck escaped serious injury this morning, after his vehicle crashed into a shopfront in Radstock in the early hours.
Great Western Ambulance Service (GWAS) received a 999 call at 3.19am to reports of the vehicle, which was towing an HGV at the time, having crashed into a building opposite the Co-op store in Wells Road.
A paramedic in a rapid-response vehicle was on scene within four minutes, and was backed up almost immediately by an ambulance crew and a duty officer, who reported to the ambulance control room that the driver was trapped but fully conscious and appeared to have suffered only minor injuries.
The patient, a man in his 40s, was trapped by his legs for over an hour, but was eventually able to climb out on his own once fire crews had removed the steering wheel. He suffered minor cuts to his legs and head.
After being assessed and treated on scene by ambulance crews and a BASICS doctor – who attended as a precaution – the patient was taken to the RUH here in Bath.
The passenger in the recovery truck – believed to be the driver of the broken-down HGV – was assessed and cleared by paramedics on scene.
