Avon and Somerset Police in Bath say they had a good response from the public to a cycle security awareness day they held in the city centre.
Crime prevention and uniformed officers put up a display stand in SouthGate and spoke to cyclists about what they could do to help prevent their bikes from being stolen.
Nearly 150 bikes worth around £70,000 have been stolen across Bath and north east Somerset over the past five months.
Crime prevention officer Beth Shire said: “There was a lot of interest from people in the security messages we were putting across – particularly when we showed just how easy it can be to cut through a cheap and inferior lock.”
Police say all owners should:
- Make a note of your bike’s name, model and frame number
- Take a photograph of your bike
- Security mark your bike and register it at BikeRegister.com for free
- Use two strong Sold Secure-approved locks, which should cost 10% of the cost of your bike
- Don’t leave your bike in an isolated place
- Always lock it when leaving it, secure to proper stands or robust street furniture
- Lock your bike through the frame and wheels
- Remove parts that can’t be secured, especially lights, pumps and quick-release saddles.
