Two people were rescued from a riverbank just behind Walcot Street on Saturday night after they fell 20ft towards the water.

The man and woman, both around 20, were left clinging to a ledge close to the water after slipping down the bank.

It was local residents living nearby which alerted the emergency services upon hearing their calls for help.

Fire crews rescued the pair using ropes and a ladder just after midnight with the man suffering injuries to his ankle during the drama.

Avon Fire and Rescue launched their support boat in Bathampton which travelled along the river to give assistance at the scene.

The pair both suffered hypothermia with the ankle injured not thought to be broken. They were taken by ambulance to the RUH as precaution.
