The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has given a prestigious award to Bath & North East Somerset Council for the second year running.
The Council’s Waste Services team has picked up the top award in the waste management and recycling industry category at this year’s Occupational Health and Safety Awards.
RoSPA’s awards programme, which has been running for over 50 years, examines not only accident records but also health and safety management systems.
Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), the Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said: “Bath & North East Somerset Council has worked hard to achieve this award, to ensure that the team can work within the safest possible environment. It is the culmination of a great deal of commitment and hard work from managers at all levels, Trade Unions and the collection staff.
“We are pleased to be leading the way for the industry in trying to reduce the level of serious accidents, and we are working with the HSE and private/public service operators to share best practice.”
Carol Maclellan, Waste Services Manager for Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “We have worked extremely hard to ensure that safety is everyone’s top priority, and are constantly looking at how we can make improvements so our work is carried out as safely as possible. I’m really pleased that RoSPA has recognised the dedication, time and effort that our staff put into this, and the continuous improvements that we are making.”
The award was presented to the team at an event in Birmingham on Tuesday May 15.
David Rawlins, awards manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) said: “The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention. We congratulate Bath & North East Somerset – Waste Collection on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.“
