Staff at Bath & North East Somerset Council are taking part in the national Walk to Work Week 2013 this week, from May 13th – 17th.
The Council has signed-up to the Week which encourages staff to think about how they can walk more during the day. In turn, this may help the organisation save local taxpayers money on things like commuter and electricity costs.
Whether it’s walking all or part of the journey to work, stepping out of the office for a lunchtime walk, getting off the bus a few stops earlier on the way home or just taking the stairs instead of the lift, walking is a free and easy way to get more exercise into a daily routine.
Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Council, is also taking part in the Week. He said, “The benefits of walking instead of using the car or devices like elevators are pretty obvious. But sometimes it needs the momentum from a national campaign like this to encourage people to rethink their daily routine, like using the stairs instead of the elevator which burns calories as well as saving energy costs. The Council is encouraging its staff to walk when are where they can when fulfilling their duties.
“I hope that other employers in the local area will follow our lead and encourage their staff to take part in Walk to Work Week 2013.”
