Recent Government legislation to promote localism enables local authorities to transfer land and buildings through long-term leases to communities.
This gives greater power to local communities about how to manage those assets for the benefit of local people. The Government see it as a key way in which councils can support the development of a strong and vibrant civil society.
Councillor Paul Crossley (Lib-Dem, Southdown), Leader of Council, said, “The Cabinet strongly believes in empowering local communities to shape the future of the area in which they live. This Asset Transfer of Beacon Hall and Field represent the first of many that Bath & North East Somerset Council intends to carry out over the coming months and years.”
Peasedown Parish Council has now assumed control of the building and fields. This measure was part of their Parish Plan and they intend to engage with local people and volunteers in order to run the facilities.
Other places included in this scheme offering by the Council include:
- Percy Community Centre – New King Street, Bath.
- Chapel Arts Centre, St James Memorial Hall, Bath.
- Fairfield House, Bath.
- YMCA Broad St, Bath.
- Genesis Trust, James St West, Bath.
