Two initiatives supported by the Council last weekend have given the local environment a Spring clean as part of efforts to create communities where people are proud to live – a total of nearly three tonnes of litter was cleared.
On Friday February 24th 2012, an army of volunteers from City of Bath College, University of Bath, Bath Spa University, Kennet and Avon Canal Trust, TimeBank Plus, the River Corridor Group, and Inland Waterway Association reported for duty to help the Council transform the river path between Churchill Bridge and Newbridge.
Around fifty people turned up to take part in litter picking, repainting benches and finger posts, graffiti removal, and cut vegetation were all part of the programme. 1.4 tonnes of litter was removed.
John Webb, from Kennet and Avon Trust, took part. He said, “We feel it is really important for people to play a part in making their communities attractive places to live. It is not all entirely the job of the Council. Everyone here today has not only had great fun and met new friends, but we’ve contributing something positive to our community.”
On Saturday 25th February 2012, community volunteers from Redland Park, Twerton carried out a litter pick with the Council supplying kit and removing the rubbish afterwards – 1.5 tonnes was cleared. It was the fifth litter pick in Bath this month alone with others having already taken place at Carlton Gardens, Oldfield Park (twice), and Bath City Community Farm.
Councillor Gerry Curran (Lib-Dem, Twerton), requested the litter pick. He said, “It is very encouraging that people are becoming increasingly enthused to work with the Council and clean-up parts of their locality. The result at the end of the litter pick is rewarding for the people who took part because they have made a positive difference to improving the surroundings of their area.”

The Council wants to support an area where local people actively lead the delivery of improvements in their community and help us to maintain clean streets and open spaces.
Councillor David Dixon (Lib-Dem, Oldfield), Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said, “Bath & North East Somerset Council wants people to come forward with ideas on how they want to play their part to keep their communities clean and tidy. We are positive about working with others and will support people with the equipment and help that they need.”
