Avon and Somerset Police were advising avoiding the London Road on Thursday evening after a child was hit by an ambulance while attending a blue light emergency.
The child was taken to the Royal United Hospital in a serious condition. Paramedics in the ambulance involved with the incident performed critical care to the 12-year-old at the scene before taking him to hospital themselves with police permission due to the severity of his injuries.
The Year 7 boy remains in a serious but stable condition after being transferred to Frenchay’s specialist head injuries unit.
The ambulance was travelling the wrong side of the London Road (common practice for emergency vehicles which get stuck in the traffic on the London Road) opposite Snow Hill outside Ashman Jones Vets. The boy was crossing the road when he was hit.
Bath became extremely gridlocked with the traffic incident and a jack-knifed lorry which was leaking fuel which caused difficulties for traffic leaving on the A36 near Limpley Stoke. An overturned car was also causing problems on the A46 Batheaston Bypass.
The Council released a statement saying: “Signage is being provided for the closure by the Council. This will result in large volumes of traffic going onto other routes. The Council will be monitoring traffic flows and making adjustments to signal timings in order to keep traffic moving as much as possible.“
It is thought that the ambulance was on route to Swainswick at the time of crash.
